The Intel "price drought" continues this week with only slight price fluctuations in the Pentium 4 line of processors. The 1.5GHz part fell $4 to $229 this week. The 1.3GHz part fell $6, putting it at $156. The fast, but expensive 1.8GHz Pentium 4 still has not found its was in quantity to the OEM market. For the time being, we recommend that people not purchase the Pentium 4 at this time because the current Socket 423 motherboards will be replaced with a Socket 478 design when the Northwood is released.
The Pentium III line of processors saw little change as well this week. The 1.0GHz chip rose $5 this week, putting it at $179. The 733MHz part saw a $5 price reduction this week, putting it at an affordable $99. This is a great processor for those looking to build a cost effective business machine.
The high-end Celeron line saw a modest reduction in price this week, trying to keep up with the low prices of the AMD Durons. The 850MHz part saw a $8 price drop this week putting it at $78. Our pick, the 800MHz part saw a $7 price reduction, putting this processor at $69. The 766MHz chip fell to a new low of $57 this week. The lower clocked Celeron's saw little or no changes in price this week.
